Wilburn Cayce DePoyster (94) passed away Thursday, April 24, 2025 at his home in the Hobo Station Community, where he owned and operated the Hobo Station grocery and gas for 26 years. He was born on March 15, 1931 in Leedy, MS to the late Winford and Annie Nuel DeFoor DePoyster. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1948. He joined the National Guard in 1951 and was sent to Augusta, Georgia to cooking school.
He came home on a furlough and married the love of his life, Reba Richardson on July 29, 1951 by G.N. Gober at his home in Iuka.
After Cayce's training in Georgia he was then sent to Columbia, SC. He was called out to go to South Korea and served 6 months at the prison camp in Tajohn, serving as Mess Sargent.
Cayce received a Bachelors of Science in Education from Mississippi State University and Specialist Degree in School Administration from the University of Mississippi.
He taught school at Holcut, MS and then Hill's Chapel where he later became the principal and served in that role for 24 years and then worked at the Prentiss County Educational Service Center for 4 years. He was a member of the Northeast MS Community College Board for 4 years, served as the 4th District Election Commissioner and was a member of the Lions's Club.
Cayce was a member and deacon at Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church. He enjoyed being on his tractor, riding his golfcart with his dogs Bo & Luke and building a fire everyday at his campground where he would take a nap.
Cayce and Reba loved traveling and camping. They traveled to all 50 states and many provinces in Canada. Most of their traveling was in various types of campers, but they also enjoyed cruises. After retiring, they spent 25 winters camping in Plant City, FL where they made numerous friends and memories.
Services are 11 am Monday, April 28, 2025 at Little Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Raybon Richardson, Bro. Rickey Taylor and Bro. Jeremy Johnson officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Zion Rest Community Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Sunday, April 27, 2025 at Little Creek Baptist Church.
Cayce is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Reba Richardson DePoyster; his children, Dennis DePoyster, Kay Crow (Gary) and Cindy DePoyster; his sister, Patricia DePoyster Nachbar; his sister-in-law, Grace DePoyster; his grandchildren, Nora Honea (Nick), Nikki Slaton (Trey) and David Crow (Britan) and his great grandchildren, Hudson Honea, Griffin Honea, Chloe Crow and Hunter Blake Crow.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Inez Johnson and his brothers, Sonny, Bobby & Billy DePoyster.
Pallbearers are Nick Honea, David Crow, David DePoyster, Matt Mauney, Bruce Harville, Tim Smith and Trey Slaton.
Honorary pallbearers are James Gargus, Dr. Vernon Chase, Wayne Breedlove, Buddy Smith, Dr. David Chase and James Arthur Huddleston.'
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Zion Rest Community Cemetery Fund.
